How to Begin a DIY House Painting Project.
Beginning a painting project can be as easy as 1-2-3 if done properly. Below, we’ve laid out the top three questions to ask yourself when beginning your next paining project.
What Type of Paint Do I Need?
Paint is not just any old thing. There are many different types of paints out there, each with their own unique characteristics. You should always choose the right type of paint for the job at hand. If you have never painted before, you may want to start off with something simple like latex primer.
Latex primer is great for beginners because it provides a good base for you to build upon. Once you feel comfortable painting, you can move onto oil-based paints. Oil-based paints are much thicker than latex and provide a nice finish. When choosing a color, make sure that it matches what you plan on using it for. If you are going to use it on wood, you may want to go with a darker color. If you are planning on using it on metal, you might want to go with a lighter color.
How Do I Prep My Surface?
Before you begin painting, you'll want to prepare your surface.
First, sand down any rough edges. Sanding helps remove any imperfections and creates a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to.
Next, prime your surface with a quality latex primer. Primers seal the surface and help prevent peeling.
After priming, apply two coats of your desired paint color. Wait about 15 minutes between coats.
Let dry completely before moving on to the next step.
How Do I Clean Up?
After you've finished painting, you'll want some cleaning supplies handy. Use soap and water to wash away any excess paint. To get rid of any leftover residue, use a tack cloth or rag.
